Pulp Cult

Volume 1 Issue 1

This installment acts as an introductory letter for the feature. It promises the marginal, the experimental, the cutting edge. It offers a pledge of allegiance: “Non-popular pop culture is our profession. In Godzilla we trust.”

Volume 2 Issue 1

This month’s article is called “War of the gargantuas”. It speaks about great times of the past. When Japanese monster movies were grand and treated as such. Then came the bad times where they are ridiculed in shows such as ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’. Now they are entering a new revival with new releases coming up starring Gamera, Mothra, Godzilla, and the offspring of Ultraman. It also briefly mentions the upcoming 5/98 release of the American version of Godzilla. The author of the article was not expecting good things from the movie and was imploring readers to watch the originals instead.

Volume 2 Issue 2

Behold the “King of Pain”. This month’s article talks about the life and movies of Sonny Chiba. He was born in 1936. Before becoming an action star, he was an athlete who had gotten an injury that prevented him from competing in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The author of the article calls him “Mr. Badass” for his over the top acting, movements and look. He did many movies in Japan in the 70s. When his movie “The Street Fighter” came to America it received the first ever X rating due to violence. This shot him into international stardom. After starring in some American movies in the early 90’s and being drowned out by other characters he returned to Japan to find his stunt team was taken over by organized crime. He eventually became virtually penniless after sinking everything he had into a movie. As of the writing of the article there are only rumors as to his current whereabouts.
